The SCB test uses specimens, which can be cut from a gyratory compacted cylinder or from field cores with a diameter of 6" (150mm). The cylinder or core is cut in-half and specially designed saws are used to cut a notch into the flat side of the specimen parallel to the loading and vertical axis.

To perform the test, this semicircular specimen is positioned onto Humboldt's H-1351 Breaking Head with the flat side sitting on the two rollers. A load is applied along the vertical diameter of the specimen and the load and load line displacement are measured during the entire duration of the test.

This load is applied with a constant 0.0005 mm/s rate of load throughout the duration of the test to ensure stable crack growth conditions.

The SCB test can be used to determine the low temperature fracture energy and fracture toughness of asphalt mixtures. Fracture energy can be used as an index parameter to identify mixtures with increased fracture resistance. This is also the main parameter used in more complex analyses of crack models. Fracture toughness obtained with this test method can be used as an index parameter to identify mixtures with increased fracture resistance. A Stiffness indication obtained with this test method can be related to the elastic modulus of asphalt mixtures at
low temperatures.

Humboldt's HM-5120 Load Frame and our H-1351 Semicircular Breaking Head can be used to perform the semicircular bend test within the specifications of ASTM D8044.

Our H-1357 SCB Sample Preparation Saw and the H-1358 Half/Notch Preparation Saw are designed specifically for the semicircular bend test and ASTM D8044. It is highly recommended that these precise saws be used when preparing samples.
