For a structure to stay in good condition, its soil and aggregate layers need to provide a stiff and stable foundation. A well-compacted base layer should be able to resist movement and deformation under stress. Sub-grade materials are typically characterized by:
• Their stiffness - resistance to deformation
• Their strength - bearing capacity
These qualities should be measured layer by layer to more effectively control structural uniformity. Humboldt provides equipment for a variety of field tests to assess these soil elements. Along with soil compaction tests, Humboldt’s lightweight deflectometer and GeoGauge are popular soil stiffness and uniformity tools.
Lightweight Deflectometers are used to easily determine compaction qualities within soil through a non-destructive method. An LWD provides a rapid determination of the bearing capacity and stiffness of subgrade and unbound base layers, granular layers, and backfilling materials according to ASTM E2835.
GeoGauges are used to determine the uniformity of unbound pavement layers by measuring the variability in stiffness throughout a structure. According to ASTM D6758, this tool enables the monitoring and control of construction qualities leading to better smoothness and longer-lasting pavement surfaces.
